“….I weed on the stick and it’s negative again; what’s wrong with me? I just can’t fall pregnant….”
Many couples expect it and see it as a rite of passage to fall pregnant and have the pitter-patter of little feet in their life as soon as they choose to do so.
Sadly for some, things do not go to plan
Sadly for some, things do not go to according to plan and their relationship is put under undue pressure and stress. This added burden on the partnership or marriage further decreases the chances of falling pregnant through various factors including the most important, that of intimacy and its loss between the couple.
As a result there is an increase in anxiety and distress between the two partners which soon infects their whole relationship.
Love making can become a chore
Love making for a couple who are desperate to have a baby and have failed to do so after repeated attempts can become a real chore. More often than not the couple becomes so obsessed in making it happen that every second of the menstrual cycle is tracked, graphed and the sexual intercourse becomes so clinical and boring, without the love and intimacy which is so important and essential when you are trying to have your first baby.
Who is to blame?
It is also not uncommon after repeated attempt and failures to have the couple start the blame game about who’s at fault for not being able to fall pregnant. In many cases it’s no one’s fault and that isn’t the real issues anyway. The issue should always remain, how are we going to achieve what we want as a couple while maintaining and strengthening our love for each other?
Here are the facts when it comes to infertility:
Female infertility accounts for 40 percent of infertile couples, with male infertility having and equal frequency. The remaining 20 percent have a joint problem or there is no real medical reason for not falling pregnant.
Here are my simple tips for increasing your chances of falling pregnant:
1. Start early: her bio-clock is ticking
Consider having children as early as possible as a woman’s ability to fall pregnant naturally and through medically assisted measures is age dependant. With many women delaying child-bearing this poses a real problem and the biggest hurdle to falling pregnant. The decline in female fertility is related to the fact that a woman is born with all her eggs and with increasing age the viability of the remaining eggs decreases, thereby reducing the chances of a successful pregnancy.
2. Lifestyle factors are important
A well balanced diet high in folate (vitamin b6)as deficienciesin folate are not only linked to neural tube defects but also to decreased fertility and increases in spontaneous miscarriages.
Stop smoking: females who smoke are less likely to fall pregnant and are more likely to miscarry.
Reduce alcohol: if you are trying to fall pregnant avoid alcohol altogether.
Reduce caffeine: it is recommended that no more than two cups of coffee per day should be drunk if you are trying to fall pregnant
Weight reduction: both obese males and females have a reduced ability to fall pregnant. Obesity is associated with a significant disturbance in reproductive hormones. In the male this will produce a low sperm count and decreased sperm mobility. In the obese female she will be 3 times less likely to fall pregnant as a result.
Exercise and weight reduction is an essential measure for increasing fertility in the couple.
3. Timing and frequency of sex
As the ovum is receptive to the sperm’s advances for approximately 24-48 hours after ovulation its important that you have sex close to that time which usually occurs at about day fourteen of the menstrual cycle
Frequency: if you a having sex too many time then his sperm count may be depleted. So save him up for the event, that is the intercourse should be as close as you can get to ovulation.
When should I see my doctor: if you have been trying to fall pregnant for at least 6 to12 months and it hasn’t happened then you should see your doctor for further advice and investigation.
Babies are made from love
Remember babies are made from the love and the bond that you have between each other. So no matter how you have your first child, whether you have a baby naturally or with the assistance of medical technology, maintaining the intimacy and the relationship bond between you and your partner is essential.
All babies need a loving environment to grow up in.
